Height Adjustable Beds: Ideal For Seniors, Disabled, Or Assisted Living Persons
While most people stop and ponder a new bed they may consider any number of variables: size, comfort, price, design, quality, warranty and whether or not it will fit in well with their existing decor. There are, however, a large group of people that focus more on one of those elements than any other: size. This large group of people may in fact be large when viewed on a one on one basis, but not necessarily; that is to say that the size of the bed is not necessarily the primary concern but rather the height of the bed.
Beds that are too tall or too short can present a serious challenge for senior citizens, those with some form of disability and those in assisted living arrangements. While some of these people may or may not be overweight, and hence the size reference, all of these people may need some level of help or extra measure of effort getting into and out of bed. On the surface that comment might sound very logical but not particularly important, think again: sleep is absolutely vital and people who have special needs are the very reason why height adjustable beds exist.
Height adjustable beds allow users to increase or decrease the height of their bed, or allow others to increase or decrease the height of the height adjustable bed to permit easier transitioning. Before considering the problem that presents these individuals on a daily basis, step back from the problem for a minute and recall how important sleep is. Sleep is vital to cellular replacement and scientists estimate that the body replenishes cells up to 500% faster while sleeping. Sleep is important to the chemical balance in the human brain and many short term memories are transferred to long term memory storage during slumber.
Sleep is also a time when foods and drinks are digested and deposited into the bladder and lower intestines. Imagine waking up feeling like it is time to use the restroom but being unable to quickly and easily transition from the bed to a standing position or a nearby wheelchair due solely to the height of the bed. If one cannot contain themselves long enough to become mobile, what are the chances that they can handle the cleaning task that is sure to follow?
Height adjustable beds can make this transition much simpler and much safer. Every year dozens of senior citizens fall out of beds and break bones or suffer other serious injuries. Some of these injuries prove to be fatal as they cannot attain a standing position and call for help. Suddenly those old commercials with the catch phrase “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” take on a whole new meaning.
Certain organizations and even some individuals may be able to write off some or all of the costs related to the purchase of height adjustable beds. Be sure to consult with a qualified accountant.
